Mother’s Day will be here before you know it, so it’s time to start thinking about unique gift ideas. A Place for Mom has compiled a list of creative ways for you to honor your mother on her special day.

Whether it is a note from a loved one or a day at the spa, moms cherish gifts from their children. As our mothers age, it can become more and more difficult to find the right gift for someone who has collected a lifetime of presents.
If you are trying to find a unique Mother’s Day gift for your mom or that person in your life who represents the best of motherhood to you, we have some suggestions. Of course, these ideas can be used any time of year, but Mother’s Day is a great time to celebrate the important role mothers play in our lives.

1. Make a Scrapbook

Projects that remind your mom of family can help spur long-lost memories and generate conversations for weeks to come. You do not have to be a master scrapbook artist to create a memory book that your mother will love. But, gathering photos in the digital age might seem like a daunting task, so it may be best to focus on a single event or theme. You can purchase scrapbooking materials or use a website like Shutterfly or Moleskin to make your book. Also consider taking the materials to your mother’s home so you can make the scrapbook together.

2. Go to Brunch

Mother’s Day brunches are highly popular and, unfortunately, often crowded. If you cannot reserve a spot at a local restaurant, go out for a late lunch or an early dinner. Some families might reserve brunch for a different weekend and make their mother’s favorite meal at home instead.

3. Build a Family Tree

Family trees typically include names and dates, but adding some pictures can turn your family history into a unique work of art. Anji Johnston posted her creation on Flickr, a set of family photos that she transferred to plaques, each one hanging in its spot on her family tree. You will find more unique ideas on Pinterest, or come up with your own way to display your family tree.

4. Get Creative with Old Photos

Take a picture of your mother that shows past and present side by side. Or you can make or purchase a unique frame in which you display a photo that is especially important to your mom.

5. Spend Time Together and Make Memories

Take your mother out for a meal, a movie or another one of her favorite outings. Or, think of an activity you can do together at home. The time you spend will be memorable and will give you more reasons to visit your loved one in the future.

6. Work in the Garden

Plant flowers or a tree, help your mother tend her garden, or put together some flower baskets to hang outside. If your mother lives in a care facility, bring some flowers to arrange together, and give some to other moms who are residents. Your mom might also enjoy a visit to a nearby horticultural garden.

7. Cook together

Ask your mom to teach you how to cook that special dish she always made just for you, or maybe one of her famous desserts. Keep it simple and fun, and shop for the ingredients ahead of time. Grandchildren can help with prep work and age-appropriate tasks as well. Who knows, maybe one of them will be the next great family chef.

8. Brighten Her Day with Flowers

Send or bring your mother some flowers on Mother’s Day. This was a popular suggestion from A Place for Mom’s Facebook fans. Cut them from your own garden, or put together a bouquet from a local shop or farmer’s market. Add a special card that conveys how much she means to you year round.

9. Capture Multiple Generations in One Photograph

Think of the look on your mother’s face when you present her with a unique photograph that captures a few generations back: great-grandparent holding a photo of a grandparent holding a photo of a parent (your mom) holding a photo of you (the child). Many variations can be created to include grandchildren, the mother or father’s side of the family, and even just the generations of women or men only.

10. Surprise Her with an Artistic Arrangement of Photos

Think outside of the frame and create an arrangement of photos on your mother’s bedroom wall. She’ll find joy every time she looks upon the faces of her immediate and extended family. Some creative ideas include: mom’s wedding photo at the center of ribbons streaming out to her children, and even grandchildren; a collage of ornamental photo frames displaying the smiling faces of mom’s family; or apply a tree decal on her wall with photos stemming from branches, and include decorative leaves.
Whether you craft a do-it-yourself arrangement, or have an artist craft one for you – your mother will truly appreciate the effort you put into creating an artistic display of her loved ones.
