How To Host Thanksgiving The Right Way

How to Host Thanksgiving the Right Way (Whether It’s Your First Time or 15th!)

Picture It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

This time of year represents gratitude, friendship, and of course, food. Putting together the menu, setting the table, and preparing the dishes for the big day is certainly a lot of work.

Whether you’ve hosted Thanksgiving every year or this is your first time in a new house (or ever!), the key is preparation. A little backwardsplanningand good ol’ fashioned list-making will save you stress later and ensure your day is a success.

To make this Thanksgiving the best one yet, take note of some of our favoritestress-busting tipsto get a head start on the festivities!

Warm Up One Week Before

The biggest stress of all is that last minute rush when you’re trying to ensure the food is ready, and the guests are entertained. Little things seem to pop up like a missing platter or the dish that just won’t finish cooking.

Eliminate that mad dash to get things done by starting early. A week before Thanksgiving is the ideal time to begin your warm up. Create your menu for T-day and make sure you have all of the recipes on hand.

Next, jot down every pot, platter, dish, and piece of silverware you’ll need. Don’t forget serving utensils, your tablecloth, and storage containers for leftovers. These are also great candidates to borrow from friends and family not hosting!

As you review your recipes, see if there’s anything that can be made ahead. Cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and green bean casserole can all be prepared at least a day or two in advance.

Even for dishes that are best made the day of, there may be ways to cut down on the prep time. Chop, mince, and peel what you can a day or two before.

Finally, set your table and lay out the decorations the night before. Not only will this cut down your “day of” to-do list, but it will also give you something festive to look at while you prepare the turkey and wait for guests.

Focus on Favorites

A giant spread looks sumptuous on the dinner table, but how much actually gets eaten? A plethora of plates may actually keep your Thanksgiving from being as successful as it can be.

For a streamlined but tasty Thanksgiving, focus on serving standards like turkey, stuffing, gravy, and a dessert.

Add family favorites and simple side dishes to round out the menu. You can always ask guests to bring a dish or drinks to make things easier on you (while ensuring Aunt Beverly gets to brag on her mirlitons for another year!)

With just enough variety on the menu, everyone will have to opportunity to enjoy the food without feeling forced to try dozens of dishes.

Keep the Drinks Simple

Offering a full bar on Thanksgiving Day may work in the movies, but it’s a ton of stress for the average host! It takes awhile to prepare a variety of mixed drinks, and you may not even use all of the supplies you’ll have to purchase.

Keep things simple with a signature punch, as it saves you time and gives your guests another spot to gather besides the kitchen! Place a complementary spirit or two alongside the bowl for those who’d like to have their tipple, and have a few types of soda or juice on hand for the younger family members.

Southeast Louisiana is a wonderful place to raise a family and make memories to last a lifetime.
